Hotter Than Lagos Drop

Hotter Than Lagos was a limited‑edition apparel drop created under Shop Utopia, designed to merge Nigerian cultural pride with a bold, modern Y2K-inspired aesthetic. I conceptualized, designed, produced, marketed, and launched the tank top drop from end‑to‑end, translating Utopia’s digital community into physical brand ownership.

This project combined product design, cross‑border logistics, e‑commerce development, content production, and digital marketing into one cohesive launch.

The concept came from my love for Lagos culture and the boom of Lagos‑based fashion brands. I wanted to create something simple, recognizable, and culture-driven - a tank top that instantly communicates identity and community.

The Idea

The Challenge

Launching a physical product with limited budget, no paid ads, and cross‑border logistics meant the brand story, aesthetics, and execution had to do the heavy lifting.

I had to:

  • design and validate a product people would actually wear

  • source, test, and switch manufacturers

  • manage Nigeria ↔ US logistics

  • build hype from scratch on TikTok and Instagram

  • plan and direct a photoshoot

  • build a Shopify store from zero

  • organize packaging + labeling

  • handle customer service and fulfillment

  • manage delays and operational surprises

  • run the entire process while my partner and I worked across countries

This required strong organization, problem‑solving, and a resilient mindset.

Cultural Identity + Visual Hype

The Strategy

The core strategy centered on:

  1. Identity: tapping into Nigerian pride + diaspora girlhood

  2. Aesthetic: bold Y2K flash photography

  3. Community: early access for subscribers

  4. FOMO: scarcity, countdowns, pre-orders

  5. Authenticity: using real girls, real culture, real looks

  6. TikTok/Instagram native content: not overly polished

The message wasn’t “buy a shirt”

It was: Join the Hottest Girls in Lagos (and everywhere else)

EXECUTION & LAUNCH

  1. Product Design & Manufacturing

I led the entire product creation cycle:

  • designed the “Hotter Than Lagos” graphic

  • sourced multiple manufacturers

  • created tech-pack details

  • ordered samples for quality testing

  • approved final fabric, printing, and fit

  • switched manufacturers mid-production due to delays

  • coordinated Nigeria and US logistics with my partner

Tools used: Canva, Pinterest (for moodboards), email + WhatsApp for supplier management.

2. Photoshoot & Creative Direction

I directed a full branding photoshoot with:

  • model scouting

  • photographer + videographer coordination

  • shoot concepts & poses

  • styling direction

  • flash-lit Y2K visual moodboard

  • set planning

The hero visual — a model holding the “If U Love Me Put Me in Utopia” phone — became the central hook of the campaign and drove strong engagement.

3. Rollout & Hype Building

Before the drop:

  • posted teasers, behind-the-scenes, early access invites

  • gifted exclusive tanks to select girls for pre-launch visibility

  • created early-access signup page on Shopify

  • integrated TikTok + Instagram Shopping into Shopify

  • built email flows via Klaviyo for subscribers

Traffic came entirely from organic social.

4. Shopify Build & Launch Operations

While production was happening, I built:

  • Shop Utopia’s Shopify store from scratch

  • custom product pages

  • subscriber popups

  • early-access page

  • “Low stock” scarcity features

  • packaging + labels

  • My partner handled Nigeria-side logistics while I handled US fulfillment.

Tools: Shopify, Klaviyo, Meta integration, USPS.
