Shop Utopia E-commerce

E commerce Strategy Shopify Development Digital Merchandising Brand Experience Conversion Thinking Order Management

Shop Utopia is the commerce arm of Utopia, built to translate the brand’s visual identity into a functional digital storefront. I designed and built the Shopify store from scratch to support product launches, customer acquisition, and order fulfillment across multiple markets.

The store was created during the launch of the Hotter Than Lagos drop and needed to do more than simply sell products. It had to reflect Utopia’s aesthetic, create a seamless shopping experience, support customers in both the United States and Nigeria, and serve as the digital foundation for future growth.

Shop Utopia was created as the shopping destination within the broader Utopia ecosystem, a place where Utopia’s products could live, launch, and scale.

The goal was to build a storefront that felt visually aligned with the Utopia brand while still being easy to shop. It needed to feel intentional, clean, and beautiful, while also functioning smoothly for real customers across different countries.

Because Utopia was still early, the store also had to establish trust. Every detail mattered, from the visual presentation of the products to the checkout flow, email signups, payment setup, and shipping structure.

The Idea

The Challenge

Building Shop Utopia meant creating a full e-commerce system from the ground up while a product launch was actively happening.

The challenge was not just designing a beautiful storefront. It was building a store that could support real customers, real transactions, and cross border fulfillment while staying aligned with the Utopia identity.

I had to

  • build the Shopify storefront from scratch

  • align the site with Utopia’s visual identity

  • merchandise products clearly and attractively

  • set up shipping and payment systems for multiple markets

  • capture email subscribers before launch

  • manage orders and inventory

  • support fulfillment across the United States and Nigeria

  • customize the store experience beyond the default Shopify setup

The store also needed to serve a very specific audience, Nigerians in Lagos and Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

The Strategy

The strategy behind Shop Utopia focused on building a store that felt both brand led and conversion ready.

The visual direction was rooted in Utopia’s identity. I used purple pastel tones, a minimal but eye catching layout, and Utopia’s primary font to make sure the storefront felt cohesive with the larger brand.

At the same time, the shopping experience needed to remain simple and intuitive. I wanted customers to land on the site, understand the product quickly, feel the energy of the brand, and be encouraged to buy immediately.

The core strategy centered on

  • clear visual merchandising

  • minimal but beautiful design

  • strong brand consistency

  • easy product discovery

  • email capture before launch

  • seamless multi market shopping

  • a storefront that felt aspirational but easy to use

EXECUTION & LAUNCH

I built the Shopify storefront from scratch, designing the site to reflect Utopia’s visual world while keeping the layout minimal and easy to navigate.

The design choices included

  • purple pastel tones tied to the Utopia brand

  • a simple, structured layout

  • Utopia’s primary font for brand consistency

  • clean product presentation

  • a polished visual experience that felt feminine, modern, and intentional

The goal was to make the store immediately recognizable as part of Utopia while still functioning as a serious shopping platform.

  1. Storefront Design and Brand Translation

Because the store launched with a small product assortment, merchandising had to be especially thoughtful. Each product needed strong visuals, accurate descriptions, and enough context for customers to feel confident in what they were buying.

I handled

  • product uploads

  • product descriptions

  • clear imagery selection

  • collection structure

  • inventory management

  • overall presentation of the product catalog

Even with only a few products, the goal was to make the store feel polished and intentional rather than empty.

2. Product Merchandising

3. Customer Journey and Conversion

A major part of the build was making the customer experience seamless from discovery to checkout.

I implemented

  • email signup flows

  • an early access page for subscriber capture

  • Shopify messaging for customer communication

  • personalized marketing flows through Klaviyo and Shopify Flow

  • clear calls to action

  • a shopping experience designed to encourage immediate purchase

The early access strategy helped us build anticipation before launch and create an audience of interested shoppers before the product officially went live.

4. Multi Market Setup and Operations

One of the most important parts of Shop Utopia was building a system that could support customers in multiple countries.

I set up shipping and payments to work for our audience across

  1. Nigeria

  2. United States

  3. Canada

  4. United Kingdom

Because our core audience includes Nigerians in Lagos and Nigerians in the diaspora, the store needed to feel accessible and functional across markets.

I also implemented payment and operational systems that supported both the United States and Nigeria, including Paystack integration and delivery APIs for the Nigerian market. My partner handled Nigerian delivery logistics while I managed the Shopify build, store operations, inventory, and United States order handling.

5. Customization and Technical Build

One of the strengths I brought to this project was the ability to move beyond drag and drop customization.

Because of my background in engineering and coding, I was able to edit Shopify code directly to personalize the storefront and create a more tailored experience. This helped me make design and functionality adjustments that better aligned with the Utopia brand and improved the overall presentation of the store.

This project showed me how valuable technical fluency can be in e commerce. It allowed me to think not only as a brand builder, but also as someone who understands the system underneath the customer experience.
